The Luck of the Irish Blog Hop

Hello Everyone!

For this hop, Alanna Coca came up with a list of words for us to create a scene with.  At the end of the hop you should be able to vote for your favorite scene.  For the scene I wrote, I chose to use some secondary characters from a werewolf series I have started writing.  I hope you enjoy.

Savannah walked alongside the river bank as she listened to Cole talk to his sister on his cell behind her.  The sun rode the horizon, painting the sky in vibrant shades of orange, red, and purple.  In the opposite direction lightning had begun streaking through the dark blue clouds.  The smell of rain was heavy on the air, but it did nothing to diminish the earthy scent of Cole.

They had been together on patrol all day.  And all day she’d had to make sure to stay down wind of him, least he scent the evidence of her arousal.  It took will power to keep her body under control, but no matter how hard she fought it, she knew her scent would betray her if he got close enough, or if the wind shifted before she could anticipate it.

Cole sighed as he hung up.  “I’m now the proud owner of a green Siberian Husky.”

Savannah looked over her shoulder at him.  “Why is it green?”

“My niece thought Sheba needed to look festive for St Patrick’s Day.”

Savannah turned back around, hoping to hide the smile that now spread across her face.

“You think it’s funny, don’t you?”

She laughed and turned, walking backwards as she held out her hand toward his shirt.  “Where do you think she gets it form?”  She laughed harder and turned around as Cole looked down at his shirt.  A large green shamrock was covered in white letters saying ‘Kiss My Irish Arse’.

“Well this is a little different then taking green hair paint to an innocent dog.”

“Whatever you say.”  The air had turned slightly cooler with the approaching storm.  While the days had grown a lot warmer, the nights still tended to be cold.  She rubbed her upper arms, wishing she’d rethought the black tank top and tan shorts.  Hell, it didn’t seem like he noticed her new outfit anyways.  She shivered as another gust of wind sailed past them.

“Here.”

Savannah turned to see Cole pull his shirt over his head.  Golden skin stretched over large muscles and rippled with the movement.  As the green cloth cleared his head, she could see the light dusting of golden hair that covered his chest, narrowing down to a trail that disappeared below the waist band of his jeans.  Her breath caught as her gaze snapped up and she looked back into his amber eyes.

“I noticed you were cold.”  He smiled as he held out the shirt.

Lust started to coil tighter in her lower belly.  With a deep breath she tried to force past it, hoping her reaction wouldn’t be betrayed in her scent.  She took the shirt form him, and had to keep herself from yanking back as her hand came into contact with his.

She started walking again with a muttered thanks as she pulled the material over her head.  Immediately she decided accepting the shirt was a big mistake.  His scent, earth and spice filled her nose with every breath.  It drove her wild and with each step she found it harder to control the flames of desire that had begun licking at her nerve endings.  She wanted him—wanted him bad.

“So what are your plans for tonight?” he asked.

Her eyebrows shot up.  Could he really be about to ask her out?  “Nothing much.  I’m thinking about curling up next to the fireplace and reading a book.  Why?  What are you going to do?”  She tried to keep hope out of her voice.

“I don’t know.  There’s always a big party at Javin’s.  Maybe I’ll go have a few shots of whiskey.”

“Oh…that sounds like fun.”  She now had to fight to keep the disappointment out of her voice.  Maybe she should just say something to him.  Or maybe not.  If he rejected her then she would have hell working with him, and they still had two out of the six months in this rotation to get through.  Maybe before they changed posts again, that is if she didn’t burst into flames from pent up desire before then.

“Yeah.  I usually have a good time when I go over there.  I believe I heard that Katya would be there as well.”

Savannah clenched her teeth as an image of the petite blonde came into her mind.  Well, if that is what floated his boat, she hadn’t a chance.  They were complete opposites in looks and in personality.  Savannah was as alpha as females could come and Katya was definitely a submissive.  Her pace quickened as her temper began to rise.  Why had she wasted time trying to get his attention?

“Savannah, slow up.”

“Why?  Can’t keep up?  I figured you would want to hurry.  You don’t want to be late for your party.”  Her teeth sank into her bottom lip.  Damn it.  She hadn’t meant to sound snippy.  But damn it, if she didn’t feel rejected.

“What’s got your knickers in a twist?”

“Nothing,” she replied and moved into a half speed walk, half jog.  Then she heard the unmistakable sound of him sniffing the air.  Shit!  The wind had shifted with the approaching storm and she hadn’t been paying attention.

“Savannah?”

She heard his steps halt and she halted hers as well.  She took a deep breath and became filled with his scent again, which served as a catalyst to her hot temper.  She yanked his shirt over her head and threw it at him.  It hit him in the face and he began to growl low in his throat.

“Your scent has changed.”

“No, it hasn’t.”  She turned and began to stomp off.  How dare he notice now.

He stepped up behind her keeping pace.  “Oh no.  Don’t you dare think you get to try to run from me and act like this isn’t happening.”

“It isn’t happening.”

He drew in a breath.  “Yes, it damn well is,” he growled.

“Gah!”  She turned and slammed her hands into his bare chest, pushing him back a few steps.  “No.  It’s not.”

He came back toward her.  “And why the hell not?”

“Because,” she pushed him, “You’re blind and stupid and you just said you were looking forward to seeing another female.”  She gave him another hard shove and he started to go over the edge of the river bank.  He grasped her arm and took her with him.

With a splash, they landed in the cold water below.  Savannah swam hard and crested the top of the water, sputtering with indignation.  “Damn you!”

Cole reached out and snaked his arm around her waist, bringing her against him.  “Damn me?  You pushed me.  And if I’m getting wet so are you.  Or should I say wetter?”

She slapped at his chest.  “Gah, you…gah.”  She pushed out of his grasp and started to swim towards the shore line upstream.  When the water started to decrease in depth she planted her feet and started trudging through the waves until she was out of the water.  She began to shiver as the last light of the sun kissed the horizon.  A roll of thunder rumbled through the sky.

“Savannah, wait.”  Cole gripped her arm.

She spun around and pinned him with a glare.  She watched as his gaze dipped down to her breasts and back up again.  She knew her nipples were rock hard and no doubt visible threw her soaking wet tank.

He pulled her against him again and that is when she felt it.  The evidence of his own arousal pressed against her.  A breath filled her lungs and brought his scent to her again, but this time it had changed.  The earthy, spicy scent was now mixed with something else she couldn’t identify, but it smelled wonderful and it had the desire she felt earlier returning.

Cole growled low as he nuzzled her neck taking in her scent.  “Mate.”

She trembled as he nipped her earlobe.  Her hands ran up his sides, loving the feel of his taught muscles beneath her fingers.  But as much as she wanted him and wanted this, she had to be sure that he wanted it too.  Yes, his impressive erection was evidence to his physical need of her.  But what she now recognized as the mate bond could be fueling that need.  She wanted more than just his physical desire.  “What about Katya?”

He laughed softly next to her ear.  “I don’t want Katya.”

She pulled back from him slightly to look into his eyes.  The amber depths seemed to sparkle.  “But you said something about seeing her.”

“I only said it to get a rise out of you.”

“Well, that was stupid,” she huffed.

“I figured it was fair, after you paraded your fine looking ass in front of me all day in those short shorts.”

She smiled.  “So you did notice.”

His hand slipped down to squeeze her ass as his head lowered, his lips mere inches from hers.  “Oh yeah, I noticed.”

She couldn’t stop the moan from escaping her lips as he closed the distance between them.  His lips claimed hers in the perfect kiss, which sent spirals of need to course through her, settling in her core.  When his tongue sought passage into the depths of her mouth she welcomed it, matching it thrust for thrust.  Liquid heat began to gather between her legs and she heard his own moan as he drew in a breath, releasing her lips.

“How about you change your plans for the night,” he murmured against her lips.

“What did you have in mind?” she smiled against his lips and wrapped her arms around his neck.

“How about we go back to your place and I lay you down in front of the fireplace and get you nice and hot.”

“You sure you want to do that.  What about Javin’s St Patrick’s Day party?”

His gaze lifted to the rainbow that painted the sky before locking with hers again.  “They are going to have to do without me, baby.  Because I found my pot of gold and she is right here.”

For participating in the hop, I am giving away one copy of Secrets of Night, Order of Night book one.  Also, I have donated a copy of Secrets of Night to the Kindle 3 that is being given as a grand prize.  I will also randomly draw one more winner to receive their choice of Secrets of Night or Winter’s Shadow for subscribing to my blog.  You can read blurbs and excerpts on both of these titles by clicking the book covers on the right.

Also Deceptions of Night, Order of Night book two, is awaiting a release day!  Here is the cover and blurb.

Tempers run hot through the members of the Order of Night as Lex tries to settle in as the new Triad vampire.  But when a jaguar attacks him in his bed, his life gets turned upside down, and he discovers a new meaning to keeping your friends close and your enemies closer.

Kill the triad vampire or your brother dies.  Shayla grudgingly accepts the assignment.  But she soon realizes that success is easier said than done as she lies prone, trapped against the floor and secured by the body of one pissed off sexy leech.

The enemy of my enemy is my friend.  Lex wants answers, and Shayla wants her brother returned alive.  They form a shaky truce as they seek out the man who has both.  Fierce attraction pushes them closer as mistrust tears them apart.  Deception lays in wait around every corner as they struggle to find the mastermind behind the traitors to the Order of Night.  As the tension rises, desire begins to burn with an intensity that threatens to consume, leaving them to question whether they can find what they seek with their lives and hearts intact.

Hope everyone has a great St Patrick’s Day!

Best Wishes,

Virginia Cavanaugh
