Chapter One

“Hey, waitress!”

Julie Drake ground her teeth as she tried to block the annoying man calling her. The crowd seemed extra rowdy tonight at Harry’s Bar, and Replacement Waitress Number Three didn’t seem to provide much help. Why in the hell did Tyra have to quit?

A deep breath entered her lungs as she loaded her tray with the drinks from the bar. Little skeleton straws poked out from some of them. Only another hour of this mess until last call. A pang of guilt speared her chest. She knew better than to hold a grudge against Tyra for quitting. People moved on. Some to greater things and others… Well, she just had to look for the silver lining.

“Hey, Jules? You all right?”

Julie looked at the burly bartender, Mark Hinley, who stood in front of a large Happy Halloween sign. Concern flashed in his green eyes as he wiped his meaty fists on a white towel. “Yeah. I’m good. Just hoping the next hour passes quick.”

He gave a curt nod and she picked up her tray, turning from the bar and heading through the pool of bodies. Mark could be a real sweetheart and had even asked her out once. Julie wished she could have said yes, but truth be told there wasn’t any spark when she looked at him. Maybe it would’ve been different if she hadn’t been haunted by fantasy-filled dreams of a man with long dark hair and olive skin. Luken.

All she had was a first a name—no way to even look him up in the telephone book. As if she would. She didn’t want to come across as a desperate woman who couldn’t wait for him to call. But damn, it had been four months since he’d come into the bar and asked for her number. She’d been sure he’d call her. Now with Tyra gone, she didn’t have a way to ask what happened. Hell, she was even curious about what happened between Tyra and the hottie who had been sitting with Luken. But no one had heard from her since she’d quit.

That had been a strange night. The bar had been hopping and Tyra had come in with a glum look on her face, but as the night had progressed she’d started to smile. And not just the I-need-to-make-tips-so-smiles-make-more-than-frowns kind of smile. It had been genuine. But then a really good-looking blond guy had come up to her and it had looked as if her whole world came crumbling down. She’d raced from the bar with him and had never come back.

Julie gasped, seeing the disaster coming, but unable to avoid it. Glass crashed and shattered as various glasses filled with alcohol sloshed and spilled. First one tray hit the floor and then a second. Laughter and applause filled the room at a deafening roar as Julie tried to count to ten, booze dripping from her face and soaking into her clothes. Replacement Number Three apologized profusely as she pulled sopping wet napkins from her own pocket, offering to help clean up the mess. Neither of them had managed to avoid being splattered.

Julie wasn’t mad at her directly. The girl couldn’t help that she was a klutz, but the rude patrons who seemed to get a kick out of her soaked state had pushed her limits of control.

Without a word she shoved past the people who had gathered around to witness her humiliation, and she bolted toward the back door. She just needed a minute—a breath of fresh air. A year’s time had done nothing in making this new lifestyle any easier. Country music blared in the background as she forced yet another person aside who sought a chuckle at her expense. Drunks could be such assholes. Her hands met the door and she plowed through it, seeking refuge.

Cool air danced over her wet skin and she shivered as her arms came up to hug her middle. The metal door swung shut behind her with a thud. Her gaze panned the back lot, not looking for anything particular as she tried to rein in her emotions. The trees swayed lightly in the breeze, dumping more of their golden and red leaves onto the ground.

“The money and ease of my old life isn’t worth it,” she whispered into the night as she squeezed her eyes shut, willing back the tears that made them burn. She knew this would be a better life deep down, but some nights were harder than others in believing that fact. Being the wife of a drug lord had many perks, but it was the other end of the spectrum that turned her stomach.

Her ex-husband Ivan Volkov sat in prison where he belonged. There would be no more deaths in the living room at three in the morning. No more beatings. No more bodies jerking and gasping as they died from too many drugs. And for that peace she could suffer through waiting on drunks. She just wanted to move on.

“Looks like you’re having a bad night.”

Julie whipped her head to the side at the sound of the deep rumbling voice, searching for his frame in the darkened area near the trash Dumpster. She knew that voice. Had she imagined it? Booted feet thumped the pavement a second before he stepped into view. Luken.

His long hair swayed against his broad shoulders. A few dark strands gripped the material of his jacket, freezing in place as the rest of the silken length continued its gentle movement. Kissable lips quirked up in a half smile, pulling the skin of his face just slightly tighter over his high cheek bones. The yellow glow of the security light masked the golden-olive skin she knew covered his body. Native American blood ran thick through his veins. All around, he was such a contrast in looks when compared to Ivan. Whereas Ivan was light and fair, Luken was dark and sensual. Luken stood tall and lean, his muscles toned, but not overly large. He had a very athletic build, and even though she couldn’t see through the V-neck T-shirt he wore, she figured his abs would look like a washboard. Her heart rate quickened as she stared across the space separating them. Desire began to bloom inside her, mixed with excitement. Then irritation took its place. He hadn’t bothered to call her and now he wanted to show up when she looked like a mop? “As if it matters.”

A full smile spread across his mouth as he continued to approach. “Of course it matters.”

She huffed a breath of air and turned, reaching for the handle of the back door. “I’ve got to get back inside.” It was just too much. A suck-ass cherry on her suck-ass night of a sundae. God, why did he have to show up now?

A warm hand clasped her arm before she could grip the door handle. She looked down. Strong fingers encircled her wrist. Warmth radiated into her skin from the contact and her heart rate increased. She turned and looked him in the eye.

“Don’t go yet.”

She sighed, wishing she could ignore the tingling awareness his touch brought. It radiated up her arm and settled in her chest. She recognized the fusion of hope and anticipation. Such a dangerous mix. “I’m working.”

“I meant to call you.”

She gave a halfhearted laugh. “Meant to? But didn’t. I really need to get back inside.”

“I’ve thought about you a lot.”

“Why are you saying these things now? I mean, you could’ve just called.” Damn if she didn’t hate how wounded her words sounded to her own ears. He would probably think her pathetic. She sure as hell thought of herself that way right now.

His lips scrunched into a slight grimace. “Things have been busy.”

“Well, now’s not a good time for me.” She shivered as another gust of air whirled past. According to the weather report a cold front was supposed to be moving in. Her gaze followed his to the front of her soaked T-shirt. Her nipples drew into pebbled peaks, now visible beneath the material. She pulled from his grasp and crossed her arms in front of her chest, glad the ugly yellow lighting wouldn’t show the blush rising in her cheeks.

Luken’s gaze snapped back to her face as he shrugged out of his jacket and swung it around her shoulders. He gripped the lapel and pulled it closed around her. His body heat seeped into her skin as the intoxicating scent of him entered her nose. Cologne like none she’d ever smelled before. Warm summer nights mixed with a hint of spice. Her lower tummy tingled, spreading to that spot between her legs that had her clenching her thighs together.

“I’m sorry I didn’t call.”

She met his gaze. Dark-brown eyes stared down at her. It had been awhile since she’d felt the quickening of desire that now began a slow roll through her. “Why didn’t you?”

“It’s complicated.”

She pulled back, trying to remove the jacket, but he wouldn’t release his hold on the front. “Where I come from, the translation is you have a wife.” Too good to be true as usual.

He gave a tug on the jacket, pulling her closer to his chest. “No. I don’t have a wife. Things have just been…complicated.”

Complicated was definitely something she didn’t need to add to her life right now, even if it came in such a yummy package. “Listen. Why don’t you come find me again when things aren’t so complicated?”

“And what if I want to just keep you where you are right now, complications and all?”

His whispered words fanned hot, sweet breath over her face. She felt herself leaning toward him even though the warning signals in her brain were firing off like mad. “I don’t know if that’s a good idea.”

His head leaned in until his lips hovered above her own. She took in a staggering breath as she wondered if he would kiss her.

“Right now it seems like an excellent idea. I want to taste you.”

She licked her lips, ready for him to close the gap. She had a feeling this would be one hell of a kiss.

Looks like things are about to heat up.

Update

Hello Everyone,

Things have been crazy busy of late in the writing department. I wanted to share with you some things that are up and coming for me.

First. The release of When Lust Rules on September 20th. A lot of people have already told me how excited they are for this second book in what I am loosely calling  The Ozark Wolves series.

whenlustrules_msr

Lusty dreams of a tall muscular man with long dark hair have filled Julie’s mind for the last few months, leaving her wanting alone in her bed. It would be one thing if he was only a figment of her imagination, but he was flesh and blood and had even asked for her phone number. But had he called? Hell no.

So when he shows up out the blue at her job, she really wants to push him away. But there is something primal and erotic about this man that calls to her.

Luken is reluctant to get involved with a human female, but for some reason he can’t get her out of his head. He has enough on his plate with running his new pack, but the little blonde seductress presents a temptation he can’t resist.

But when Julie’s past catches up to her, Luken is prepared to offer her his protection, along with his bite, making her one of his own.

Next bit of news is that I have signed Winter’s Shadow with Fated Desires. I am happy to join their team. Cover art is still forthcoming. I can’t wait to see the new cover for this one. But I do have a release date. December 10th.  Just in time to heat up someones holiday. I went through this story and made some additions.

I went back and forth on what to do with the Order of Night series. I really wanted to finish it and I finally decided how. This series will be self published. But don’t worry, it will still be quality work. I will use a freelance editor for the upcoming books, and I know she is worth her salt. Also she is providing me with awesome new covers. The best news is, Secrets of Night will be free and I plan to keep the pricing of the subsequent full novels at $2.99. I will keep you all updated on this as it progresses. But check out these new covers for Secrets of Night and Deceptions of Night.

I should get edits soon for Tell Me Your Secrets, a paranormal novella that will be part of the Emerald Isle Fantasies series at EC.

Right now I am working on the third book in the Ozark Wolves series and a joint ghost story with the awesome Rebecca Royce. That story will also be part of the Emerald Isle Fantasies series with Ellora’s Cave.

I will be attending Romanticon in Canton Ohio on OCT 10th- 14th. And when I get back I plan on registering for RomCon in Denver CO. My partner in crime, Dena Garson will be attending with me. I have not yet decided if I will attend the Wild Wicked Weekend in San Antonio in FEB, but I really want to. Hopefully I will be able to know something by NOV at the latest.

Best wishes,

A Romantica® paranormal erotic romance from Ellora’s Cave

Excerpt:

As Valerie turned the vehicle to cross the bridge, Rena gazed up at the tall walls to find a lone figure standing between the battlements. Synn. A shiver raced down her spine. As attracted to him as she was, he caused her insecurities to surface. One minute she wanted him to kiss her and the next she wanted to sink to the floor in shame. Her gut said he was upper class, but her mind said he was penniless.

Valerie pulled the Expedition to a stop. “I’ll bring in the bags of ice if you grab the cooler. Then we can dump all the cold food in it as we bring it in.”

She nodded and picked up the new red Igloo they’d purchased. A refrigerator would be at the top of the priority list…once they had electricity.

After dumping the cold food into the cooler, they strolled back outside for the last of the bags. Valerie grabbed two more. “It would be nice if our resident guest would help us with all this stuff.”

Rena hefted the last bag. “I’m sure he would have, but he’s on the roof. I bet the sunset is amazing from there. Maybe we can see the ocean. It was only a few blocks west when we were driving in town today.” An image of the lone man standing on the battlements crowded her head. “Do you mind if I run upstairs. I really want to see the sunset.”

Valerie took three loaves of bread from the first bag. “Yeah, yeah, go. But don’t expect me to make dinner.”

“That’s a deal.” Spinning around, Rena ran up the stairs to her wing of the Abbey. Striding through the hallway toward the back, she found another set of stairs leading to the floor above, which had a similar hall. By the time she reached the end of that hall, she was at the front of the Abbey again, only here there was a stone spiral staircase. Carefully, she ascended.

At the top, a wooden door stood open and she stepped outside into the fading light of day, but it wasn’t the sunset that arrested her attention. Synn stood, one foot braced on an embrasure, one hand resting on the crenellated stone of the battlement. The breeze lifted his long, brown hair away from his face and off his shoulders…his very bare shoulders.

Oh shit. She hadn’t expected his back to be so broad and muscular. His biceps stood in stark relief as if he worked construction. Below his narrow waist, his firm ass and muscular thighs were outlined by his tight gray pantaloons, if she had the term right. She’d bet the boots he wore were Hessians because those were the only nineteenth-century boots she’d heard of that rose to the knee. To call the man handsome would be to belittle his sculpted perfection, and her heart increased its beat as raw, sexual attraction rifled through her limbs.

He brought his arm down, causing the muscles in his back to ripple before he turned to catch her staring.

Her gaze shifted to his eyes and for a moment they revealed such heartbreaking anguish that all sexual heat fled and her stomach tightened into a sorrowful knot. He shuttered his gaze and smirked. “Were you looking for something?”

Confused, and more than a little distracted by the man’s emotions and his highly defined pectoral muscles, one of which had a fist-sized dark spot, she grasped for logic. “Yes, the sunset.”

“Ah, then you are just in time.” He stepped to the side, bowed and swept his hand toward the battlement. “It’s ready for you, my lady.”

She searched his eyes for any sign that he made fun of her, but found only sincerity. “Thank you.”

She stepped up to the place next to him as indicated and gazed across the town. As she suspected, the ocean was a few blocks past the shops and it glittered red as the setting sun shimmered off its dark surface, its waves lifting and lowering the dazzling color as it moved.

“This is breathtaking.”

“Yes, it is.”

His tone made her glance up, and she found him staring at her. She swallowed.

He released her hair from its clip and the breeze swept it from her face. She couldn’t have looked away from his eyes even if the sun had turned green.

He cupped her jaw with his hand. “You are exquisite.”

Her breath hitched at his words, but her mouth parted as his face drew closer to hers. When their lips were but a breath away, he spoke again. “You are made for passion, Rena.”

She let her eyes close, his words shooting pure desire through her and then his full lips were upon hers. It was not a gentle kiss, but neither was it harsh or demanding, simply controlled. The hand holding her face encouraged her to open her lips and she did.

She grasped his biceps as his tongue swept into her mouth to explore. He tasted like cinnamon spice but not sweet. When his arm snaked around her waist and pulled her closer, she entwined her arms around his neck, her body tight against his hard one. Unable to stem the growing need building inside her, she pressed her hips into his. A long, hard cock greeted her. She wanted him.

Synn groaned and released her, stepping away.

She grabbed at the embrasure to keep herself from falling on her ass. What the hell was that?

He turned toward the sunset again, his body in perfect profile, his hands clenched at his sides.

Not sure if she was upset because he stopped the kiss or because he started it in the first place, she gritted her teeth. Her body ached for release and she wanted him to provide it, no matter what her mind said. Her sexual frustration gave her a bravery she rarely had. “Why did you stop kissing me?” She had hoped to sound matter-of-fact, but hurt crept into her voice. Did he find her beneath him?

He remained motionless, speaking to the horizon. “If I didn’t stop now, I wouldn’t be able to. You are not ready for me yet.”

To help Lexi celebrate her release I will be giving away an electronic copy of Seductive Reunion!

Today’s character spotlight is a bit darker. The darkest, in fact. Today we’re talking about the Darkness, the force of evil that threatens the world of Spellbinding. Here’s a little section from the book that explains about the Darkness.

Darkness

Excerpt from CAUGHT IN CRIMSON

Delia lifted her eyes as the High Priestess moved to the center of the circle. Standing tall with arms raised and palms upward, Ravenna finished the chant.

A shiver of foreboding ran through Delia and she glanced upward, even though she knew what she’d see in the pale moonlight. Darkness gathered in the tops of the trees and peered down on the assembled witches like so many carrion birds. The creatures, made of nothing but shadow and evil, were escapees from the Underworld. Bad karma run amok. Without these monthly circles to diminish the numbers, Darkness could easily overcome them, bringing destruction and horror to witch and human alike. Biting her lip, Delia grabbed for another tendril of magic to send to Ravenna.

It’s hard to fight an enemy that doesn’t exactly have a solid physical form. The witches of the world of Spellbinding routinely combat these foes, and without their constant work the world would be plunged into the dark.

I think that this particular foe is extra scary, because it houses a lot of the unknown. Darkness preys on our fear of the unknown. Who hasn’t been afraid in the dark at some point in their lives? When the enemy in a book is frightening to the reader (and the writer!) the danger is that much more immediate.

Creeped out by the Darkness? I don’t blame you!! How about a little giveaway to make you feel better? Only a few days left before the contest closes, so make sure you get your entries in now!

Hello Everyone!

Please welcome Dena Garson as she tells us about her sizzling new release, Risky Business. 🙂

riskybusiness_msr (2)

Risky Business
By Dena Garson
Blurb:
Mia Sanford has been working with Jake Hudson for years. Despite their obvious attraction, neither has been willing to take the chance and act on their feelings. Even though, as they both discover, everyone in the company thinks they should have gotten together long ago.
When Mia becomes the target of an embarrassing betting pool at the annual office party, Jake alerts her to the danger. But Jake is the company playboy, and has never expressed an interest in Mia until now. Is he really looking out for her, or just trying to win the pool himself? Mia must decide if she can trust him not only with her reputation, but also her heart.
Excerpt:
“Mia Sanford, where the hell have you been?” Robin’s voice rose over the noise of the crowded ballroom.
Mia rolled her eyes as she joined her two best friends, Robin and Mandy. Mandy elbowed Robin in her ribs.
“Ow,” Robin complained. “What was that for?”
Mandy whispered, “You don’t have to call attention to the fact that Mia’s been missing. Mr. Patterson could have been within earshot, you goof.”
Robin scanned the people nearby. “Oh.” She dropped her voice to a whisper. “Sorry.”
“It’s okay,” Mia said, resigned to the fact that Robin was just that way.
“Where have you been?” Robin asked quietly. “We were getting worried.”
“I had an, uh, an equipment malfunction.”
“What’d you do? Pop a bra strap or something?” Robin pressed.
“Worse,”Mia grimaced, not wanting to admit what the real problem was.
Robin and Mandy tried to suppress their giggles.
“Were you able to—” Robin tried to stifle another fit of giggles but failed. “Did you fix the problem?” she asked with a huge grin.
“No.” Mia looked around to make sure that no one was listening nearby. “I finally gave up and tossed them.”
Robin, in true Robin fashion, blurted, “So you’re going commando?”
Mandy elbowed Robin again. Mia prayed for a hole to open in the floor so she could disappear into the abyss. Unfortunately such a rescue would not be forthcoming. She took a deep breath and reminded herself that she really did love Robin like a sister and she shouldn’t kill her. There was little to be done about what everyone around them had heard so Mia shrugged and admitted quietly, “I’m afraid so.”
Both of the girls broke into a fit of laughter.
“Oh my God, that’s too funny. At the annual office party too.” Mandy added, “If Mr. Patterson only knew.”
“Yeah, yeah,” Mia mumbled. “You wouldn’t be laughing if it were you.”
“Well, there are advantages to going without,” Robin admitted.
“Really?”Mia asked with disbelief as she crossed her arms across her chest. “Do enlighten us.”
“If you pick up a guy in the bar, it saves a little time getting down to the deed.”
Mandy nodded her agreement. “And you wouldn’t have to worry about losing them at someone else’s place.”
Mia covered her eyes with one hand. “That is more information than I needed to know about either of you.”
“What?”Robin said innocently. “I didn’t say it had happened to me.”
Mandy snorted, “Yeah, right.”
“I need a drink,” Mia groaned.
“You want watered-down tea off the buffet or a real drink?” Robin asked.
“A real drink,” Mia said, with emphasis on “real”.
“Me too.”
“Let’s go.”They spoke in unison.
The three friends headed to the cash bar, pausing only long enough to say hello to a couple of coworkers as they passed. Mia was the last to get her drink and had just taken a sip when Mandy mumbled out of the side of her mouth. “Jake Hudson at one o’clock.”
Mia tried not to choke or show any reaction to Mandy’s statement. Thankfully the lights were low enough in that part of the room that the pink she was sure was staining her cheeks wouldn’t be noticeable. Jake Hudson was Mia’s longtime secret crush. They had always gotten along well when they had worked on the same project team, but Mia thought Jake was a bit out of her league when it came to personal relationships.
With his dark-blond hair, blue eyes and athletic build, Mia guessed Jake tripped over single women every time he stepped out of his apartment. She was far more comfortable in well-worn jeans and t-shirts. No competition against the urban chic-clad girls Jake normally dated. Not that she could wear her comfy-cozy clothes at work.
Robin stepped closer and added, “I think he has a thing for you, Mia.”
Mia’s eyes widened in disbelief. “Why would you ever think that?”
Mandy nodded in agreement. “I think so too. I’ve seen him watching you when you’re not looking.”
“What are you two talking about?” Mia couldn’t contain her disbelief.
“Seriously. I’ve been in meetings where he’s stopped listening and watched you walk by,”Mandy said matter-of-factly.
“That doesn’t mean anything. He was probably just bored with the meeting,” Mia suggested, still stunned that her friends would ever think that about Jake. She frowned as she thought back to all the times she and Jake had caught each other looking. Was it possible that her attraction wasn’t as one-sided as she first thought?

Update

Hello Everyone!

Life has been crazy lately, and I have been away from my blog for a time. But I wanted to take some time to update everyone on what is going on in my writer life this year.

First let’s start with my recent release, Magical Kiss. A steamy story featuring a witch and a warlock published by Ellora’s Cave.

Magical Kiss

Being a carnal magic user doesn’t make Breeze Hawthorne easy. In fact she’s tired of the nasty names her kind tends to get labeled with. So when she finds herself paired with sexy water user Chehon McFlint, she’s determined to keep things professional no matter how bad her body burns for him.

A horrid beast is about to break loose from his underwater prison and Breeze is running low on juice. When she fails to get hold of her usual service partner she’s faced with a decision that could cost her emotionally. Chehon seems ready, willing and able to handle the job of recharging her, but she isn’t so sure he will leave her heart intact when the job is over.

I will be attending the Naughty Sleepover in San Antonio Texas FEB 22nd. I hope to see you there. http://sassyseven.com/naughty-sleepover/

I have already reserved my room for Romanticon 2013! This conference is such a blast. If you haven’t attended before you must consider coming to party the weekend away with us in Canton OH. http://ecromanticon.com/

Right now I am working hard on Luken’s story from The Fire Inside. After I complete it, I’ll be moving onto a new werewolf story that is to be apart of a multi author series coming soon from EC. I’m really excited about this series that will offer many different paranormal stories. 🙂

After that it will be onto Javin’s book. You might remember this smart ass from The Fire Inside as well.

That’s all I have for now. Happy reading. 🙂

Best wishes,
