Shadeau fled quickly with his prize. He gripped her tight, careful to keep her from bouncing against his shoulder. He didn’t want any harm coming to his mate. After a hundred and seven long years of searching for her, he would let nothing stand in his way of claiming her.

He fled from the fighting, heading toward a human populated area. The snow fell in earnest, and he was lucky for the cover it provided. Streaking naked with an equally naked woman over his shoulder would definitely cause a stir. But he had to get far away from Ivan and the rest of Arik’s men.

They’d been tasked to come in and raid for females. Arik wanted to breed an army and it was the time of year that most female werewolves went into heat. Shadeau took in a deep breath, testing his mate’s scent. Her heat cycle wasn’t upon her yet, but he’d be damned if he delivered her for Arik to rut.

Mine!

No one would touch his mate. Besides, it wasn’t as if he owed any real loyalty to Arik anyway. Shadeau was strong enough to break the invisible tether that tied him to Arik. When Arik attacked the pack Shadeau had been with, Shadeau had went willing under Arik’s rule. His deceased alpha Torin had been a real asshole, so what was moving from one’s rule to the next.

At first it had been pretty sweet during the changeover. Arik had money. The new bunk house he’d been shown to was nicer than anything he’d stayed in before. The den was hidden away, deep inside Hoosier National Forest near Patoka Lake.

Arik had talked a whole construction crew of guys into being changed at the same time as he was. They’d been busy ever since creating a formidable stronghold. Apparently the company had done many projects for Arik in the past, and were quick to follow Arik and his money.

The area Arik had cleared couldn’t be seen from any road. A few rangers had wondered in and seen what was up, but before they could report in, they were taken hostage. They now awaited the next full moon, when Arik would make them one of his own.

The place wouldn’t stay a secret for long, but that wasn’t a concern of Arik’s. He planned to make war with humans. In fact, none of them had hid what they were when they attacked the packs in the Ozarks. Arik wanted to strike fear into humans—wanted them to know that the big bad wolf was lurking. The fallout would be massive. Panic would ensue.

Shadeau started having his doubts then about Arik’s leadership. The man was a dumbass new born. There were reasons that their kind had been a secret all these years. Arik had big balls, and a big pocket to back them, but would it be enough?

A low moan came from his mate. Arik didn’t matter anymore. The wolf with the soft lush curves over his shoulder was his focus now.

What a beauty she was. Long blonde hair had swayed across her back when she’d fled. Tall and lithe, her pale skin had glistened with beads of moisture as snowflakes landed on her and melted.

And her ass. His hand slid up the back of her thigh to cup one rounded globe. Her ass was the thing of dreams. His cock hardened at the thought of taking her from behind—his hips thrusting against her bottom with a satisfying slap.

He pushed away the carnal thoughts. Right now he needed to find supplies and shelter. The tranq she’d been hit with would keep her asleep for around four hours. Their plan had been to dose their captives again, but Shadeau had come in ready for combat. He hadn’t been one of those men who had been tasked with a dart gun. His only choice was to find somewhere close to hide her until he could figure out what to do next.

Near the edge of town, Shadeau spied a house with a For Sale sign in the front yard. The place looked to encompass around five acres and had a barn in the back. From what he could tell, the place looked empty.

He started for the barn. The house would have offered more comfort, but he couldn’t be sure there wasn’t a security system, or chance a realtor popping in to show the house. At least in this weather, if someone came, the out buildings wouldn’t be toured as thoroughly, if at all.

The side door opened on well-oiled hinges. He stepped inside, careful to steer his mate through the opening without causing her harm, and pulled the door closed behind them.

Outside, the wind howled as the storm picked up. Inside, the barn had been cleaned. A few broken leather straps and some old tack hung on a post in the center. Shadeau made for the stall in the corner. The dirt floor had been cleared of most its straw. He’d hoped to find something to make his mate more comfortable than the hard ground, but this would have to do.

He squatted down and laid her on her side. He couldn’t stop from pushing her hair back away from her face. She looked so peaceful in sleep. He traced a finger across one high cheek bone and then down her jaw. Her skin was so soft against his calloused digit. She was perfect. Plump breasts with dusted rose-colored tips. A handful begging for his lips.

His hand skimmed over her hip. The cold skin beneath his palm had his thoughts turning back to supplies. He didn’t have much time. Going back into the storm didn’t sound appealing, but he didn’t have a choice. He wouldn’t let his mate suffer.

Rising to his feet he left the stall, securing the door behind him. He didn’t want the wind to whip in when he opened the outer door again. With quick steps he fled the barn and headed toward town. On the way in to the raid he could have sworn he saw a dollar store on the outskirts.

Luck smiled upon him as he saw the building up ahead. The shop keepers were locking up. Forecasters had issued a severe weather warning. He could only guess that people were closing up early to avoid being stranded. The snow fall was quickly approaching white-out conditions. In fact, Arik had counted on the storm covering their tracks. Looked as if he’d get his wish. They would also help hide his mate until he could figure out what to do.

Unlike the barn, this store would definitely have an alarm system. With the road conditions and the 9-1-1 calls on people turning into wolves, he would have a max of five minutes to be in and out. He made his way to the back door and kicked the shit out of it. The hinges gave and the metal swung open with a bang.

Wasting no time, he darted inside, scooping up supplies of all types and stuffing them in a hand held basket used for shopping. Clothes, blankets, food and various other things were piled inside. When the first was filled he grabbed a second. He could move quickly with the two.

Three and a half minutes later he headed out the door. Sirens blared as he took to the trees. Thanks to his DNA, he also had great speed in his human form, which came in handy while making this getaway. He weaved a path through the dense foliage, making it harder to track where he’d been. The cops would follow the trail into the woods, and while they spent time tracking he would already be back to the barn, his trail covered by the time they looked in that direction.

The cold, wet snow felt like pins and needles to his legs and feet, but soon it surpassed the painful point and they went numb. He pushed on, anxious to be with his mate once more.

When he reached the barn he found her sleeping where he’d left her. He sat down his baskets and riffled through them. As much as he liked looking at her nude body he wanted her warm. He found sweats and socks, pulling them onto her body. After he fully dressed her, he pulled on the clothes he’d grabbed for himself.

Next he spread a blanket on the ground and laid her on it. The next one he placed over her from shoulders to toes. Once done, he sat down and watched her. He longed to hold her. Leaning forward, he took in her scent again. Such sweetness. He closed his eyes, savoring it. His for eternity.

Opening his eyes, he looked back down on her delicate features. He wondered what her name was. But he also wondered if she would be as pleased with him. He wasn’t sure how to be with her. Gentle had never been in his repertoire. The dominate wolves in Torin’s pack had taken what they wanted, and most of their females had been submissive, eager to do what was wanted to please. But this woman would be different.

He knew his dominance exceeded hers, but she by far wasn’t some wilting flower. She’d been leading those wolves on that hill. Hadn’t even paused before charging him when he’d taken a male of her pack down. His wolf clawed at him on the inside. It liked what it saw. Winning her would be a challenge, but so worth the battle.

She moaned and rolled on to her back, her arm coming to rest over her eyes. Her limbs beneath the blanket squirmed. She was waking.

“Shhh. Easy. You might be a little dizzy.”

Her arm swung out and her eyelids peeled back. Blue met gold and she released a shocked yelp as she scrambled backward. Her hands went to her head and Shadeau started forward concerned.

“Stay the hell away from me!”

Shadeau ignored the stabbing pain in his chest that her words brought. “I won’t hurt you.”

She drew up onto the balls of her feet as if ready to pounce. “Really? You only knocked my ass out and carried me to…” She looked around then back at him. “Where the hell are we?”

Secrets of Night Teaser

Hello,

Please enjoy this taste of the forbidden.

Chapter One

Kierra stood in the thick woods, surveying the three floors of the brick mansion that housed the shape-shifting senators of the Order of Night for area four. She crept silently through the woods and slid behind the massive trunk of an old maple tree, concealing herself in its shadow. She peered around it, careful not to expose her form to their enhanced vision.

A strong masculine hand clamped around her mouth, and she drew in a shocked breath through her nose. A warm summer breeze glided past, rustling the leaves above her head and carrying the scents of pine, earth, and something else extremely tempting and forbidden. The muscles in her body—tense with need to react and defend herself—relaxed as she realized she had nothing to fear from the newcomer. His hand slid from her mouth and down her neck, causing her to shiver. The moonlight filtered by the dense canopy of trees partially illuminated the area. Soundless movement brought the vampire Kale around to stand in front of her.

Even though it was forbidden for her to mix with other races, she could not stop her body or mind’s reaction to him. Her gaze roamed over his form as her heart increased its tempo. He easily stood at six and a half feet tall and had pale blue eyes. Long black hair flowed over his shoulders and down his back. Full lips were turned up in a playful smile, revealing a small dimple above a strong jaw. The rippling muscles of his body were large and well defined. The black tank top showed them off to perfection and his black leather pants hung on his lean hips.

“Witch,” he stated in greeting.

“Anemic brat.” She cast him a contemptuous smile. She hated it when he called her witch. Her race took it as an insult. “And once again I shall remind you that the politically correct term is sorceress. I don’t chant, draw pentagrams, or brew potions. Now get back before they see you.”

“Which brings me to my first question.” He walked around the tree, coming to a stop behind her. “What are you doing here?”

His whisper sent heated breath across her neck and cheek. A mild shiver of delight traveled down her spine. She wondered if he had any idea of the effect his presence had on her. Part of her wished he would go crawl back under whatever rock he had crawled out from under while the other side wanted to know why he was here in the first place. She had taken a great risk in coming herself. So what motivated him? She looked at him over her shoulder. “I should ask you the same thing.”

“I was just out for a stroll. How about you?”

She rolled her eyes, refusing to rise to the bait. Could he ever be serious? She focused her attention back to the front of the house. Three black SUVs were parked in the circle drive with their motors left running. Two men, dressed in solid black, stood off to the side smoking. Their faces were illuminated faintly by the red glow of their cigarettes as they inhaled, but she did not recognize them. The bay window of the dining room revealed the five shape-shifting senators seated at a long table, along with ten other people who Kierra assumed were also shifters. “There’s a lot of activity going on in there.”

She felt the slight pressure of his body behind her as he peered over her shoulder at the house. A wave of heat washed over her as his chest came into contact with her back, and she found it increasingly harder to think clearly.

“I agree, but that still doesn’t tell me why you’re here.”

She drew in a tight breath. The effect he had on her was sinful. The heat radiating from his body made her want to lean back into his chest. Reminding herself that he was forbidden to her did nothing to cool her desire. She closed her eyes and prayed for the strength to resist her base urges where he was concerned. Feeling more in control she opened her eyes and answered his question.

“Earlier today, a group of five young sorceresses were attacked,” she whispered. “They all ranged between twenty and twenty-five years of age. Their powers were just starting to surface and were still very unstable. Three of the women were taken, and the two that returned were scratched up and bitten. They said they were attacked by a group of shifters they hadn’t seen in this area before.”

“Are the two that got away certain that the other three were taken and not killed?”

“They said they were being shoved into the back of a van. They only escaped because Emmaline shocked her captor and then reached out and shocked Catheria’s. They both ran for it as Emmaline placed a shield around them. They’re very lucky Emmaline was able to control her magic.”

“You know, even if the senators had something to do with this, they wouldn’t have been stupid enough to bring them here.”

“I know. But you have to admit that their absence during the Order’s biannual meeting last night, coupled with this abduction, is more than a little odd. No new shifters would’ve been able to settle in this area without the consent of their monarch and the area four senators. I want answers, and I figure this is as good a place as any to start getting them.” They were either here illegally with the blessing of the senators, or their monarch was involved with whatever they were up to. Without knowing, she couldn’t very well turn it over to the shifter triad member. She had to know if they were all corrupt or just the ones in front of her.

Kale stepped back. “And now you plan to just waltz in there with guns blazing? Without consulting the Order first?”

She turned to face him. “I’ve been a senator of the Order for ten years now, and you’re filling in as a senator as well as being a member of the triad, so now that we’ve talked, I’ve consulted. And I don’t plan on going in there guns blazing. From the looks of it, they’re getting ready to leave, so I am going to sneak in.” Her stare became fixed on the strong line of his jaw as he crossed his arms and cast his best that isn’t going to fly look.

“Do you really expect me to stand here and do nothing?” she asked, fixing her gaze back on his pale blue eyes.

“Such youthful impulses can get you into trouble.”

“I’m not a youth. I’m a hundred years old. Just because I wasn’t alive when the dinosaurs roamed the earth doesn’t make me a youth.” Twenty years ago, she’d moved out of the convocation dorms younger sorceresses lived in until they grew into their magic. As any other sorceress would have done, she’d declared her independence with the blessing of the convocation’s elders. It really irked her when he made references to her age, and she was beginning to think he did it on purpose. She silently cursed herself for rising to the bait this time and giving him the retort he had no doubt sought.

He rolled his eyes. “No, I don’t expect you to stand here and do nothing, but I’m going in with you.”

She placed her hands on her hips. There wasn’t a need for him to babysit her. “You can’t do that. The other members of the triad would have your butt in a sling for something like this.” No way in hell was she going to allow him to blame her if he lost his position with the triad. Why would he want to risk something like that anyway?

“My being part of the triad is how we’re going to keep our butts out of the sling.”

She threw her hands up in defeat, knowing there was no point in arguing with him. He could be impossibly stubborn when he wanted to be, and it seemed like any time he was around her, he chose to be.

She turned from him and peered around the tree again as the sound of multiple voices reached her ears. Senators Eric and Bree led the group out of the house, the dim yellow parking lights bathing their faces in a soft glow. Eric’s angular jaw was clenched tight. She knew that look. He wore it when he was extremely focused and determined. The breeze stirred his dark short locks. Bree held her head high as she marched toward the waiting vehicles, her long ponytail swaying against her back. Always so pretentious.

The lights in the house had all been extinguished, casting the rest of the group in shadow. She couldn’t make out what they were saying, but from the tone, it appeared they were arguing. At times like these, she wished she had the super hearing the vampires and shifters had inherited. Kierra whispered over her shoulder, “Are you catching any of this?”

“Pieces. Eric’s pissed off that one of the others challenged his authority. Now Bree just told them all to shut their pie holes, in a not-so-nice manner.”

Kierra watched as Bree yanked open the lead SUV’s passenger door and climbed inside. For a person who shifted into a rabbit, Bree could be pretty pompous. The others got into the vehicles.

Kierra and Kale both lay flat on the ground as the SUVs passed by. The sound of dirt and rock crunching under the tires faded, signaling the coast was clear.

“So how do you want to do this?” Kale asked as he got to his feet and extended his hand to her.

“When I arrived I made my way around the perimeter and noticed a back door.” She jumped up and released his hand. “I believe it would be best to enter through it.”

“Lead the way, Witch.”

She stepped off the lift as the doors opened and she crossed the hall to her door and unlocked it. It swung shut behind her as she sauntered to the desk and placed the old book on the polished surface. Before she sat down a knock sounded at the door. She stood on tiptoe to look through the peephole. A large, sexy Dorian stood on the other side.

Jesenia turned, placing her back against the door as her heart rate accelerated. “Shit,” she whispered. Another knock. “Just a minute,” she called out as she dashed into the bathroom.

She flipped the switch and ran her fingers through her hair. Shit, why had she skipped putting on makeup this morning? She gave her cheeks a quick pinch and decided it was the best she could do with no time, and returned to the door. She inhaled a steadying breath, twisted and pulled on the brass knob. “Can I help you?”

Dorian smiled. “That depends.”

Oh damn. That smile of his was a dangerous thing. “And what does it depend on?”

Dorian stepped into her room and walked past her. She closed the door as her brows rose. “Well come on in.” She hoped he caught the sarcasm. She turned to look at him and he winked at her.

“Thanks.”

She rolled her eyes, placing her hands on her hips. “So what do you want?”

“What are you willing to give me?”

Her core pulsed as her body let her know what it preferred she give him. “How about directions to the door?”

“Ah, lass. Do you really want me to go so soon? I just got here.”

No, she didn’t. And didn’t that just chap her ass. She pursed her lips.

“I came to check on you.”

“Oh. Well, I’m good. Walking fine. Thanks for checking on me.” She needed to get him out of her room before she did something stupid.

Dorian sat on the bed and started sifting through some of the printouts she’d made last night. “My, my, Jesenia. Are you really still convinced you saw a wolf?”

She rushed to the bed and started gathering the papers. “I know what I saw. And it’s still out there.” She plucked the last sheet from his hand, walked over to the desk and laid them on top of the book she’d brought in.

“You’ve become obsessed. Did you even sleep last night?”

Jesenia decided not to answer him. So what if she’d stayed up all night. She was still fine and of sound mind. Hell, when her muse wasn’t being a hiding little bitch she pulled all-nighters a lot. She turned to face him. “I’m fine. You can go now.”

“Jesenia, it’s three o’clock in the afternoon. If you didna sleep last night you really should be in bed.”

She crossed her arms in front of her chest. “And I guess you think you’re my daddy now and can tell me what I should be doing and when? I hate to tell you, but I’m a grown woman and I can figure things out on my own.”

Dorian stood and crossed over to her, closing the gap between them. She sucked in a breath and tensed.

He brought his hand up and pushed a lock of hair behind her ear. “I know you’re a grown woman.” His gaze traveled to her breasts. “Oh how I know that.” His gaze came back up to her face. “And what I feel toward you is not in any way something a dad would feel.”

Her hands went to his chest as his pelvis met hers. The hard length of his erection pushed into her lower belly. She licked her lips as his hand cupped the side of her face.

“Stop me, Jesenia,” he whispered.

“Why would I want to?”

He groaned and closed the gap, molding his mouth to hers. Jesenia parted her lips for his seeking tongue and moaned into the depths of his mouth. Her hands lifted to his neck and settled in his hair. A powerful hand gripped her bottom, pulling her closer into the welcoming heat of his body. Damn, he could kiss. His tongue played a sensual game with her senses, gliding back and forth provocatively against her own.

Her nipples tightened into sensitive buds as liquid heat coated her labia. Could she really do this? She hadn’t had sex in so long, and she was covered by the Pill. She had to take it to keep her regular. But she barely knew this guy. And it really shouldn’t make a difference how hot he was, but it did. Still, she needed to be smart. She pulled her mouth away from his. “Maybe we should…”

His lips found her neck. Tongue and teeth played a wicked game against her sensitive flesh and she dug her fingers into his shoulders as her pussy began to throb, aching to be filled.

He nipped her earlobe and whispered, “Maybe we should what, lass?”

Oh God, that accent did things to her. Fuck it. You only live once. “Maybe we should move to the bed.”
